| Quote: | The Latin Liturgy Association regrets to announce that Dr. Robert Edgeworth, former LLA Chairman, passed away on Friday, 22 October 2004, after a lengthy illness. Dr. Edgeworth was 56 years old and had bravely confronted several conditions over the last decade, repeatedly defeating all odds and continuing his work and travels.
Dr. Edgeworth was Professor and onetime Chairman of Classical Languages at Louisiana State University. He was instrumental in expanding the classics curriculum there into a highly successful program.
Dr. Edgeworth was a highly proficient parliamentarian, lending his expert knowledge of Roberts Rules of Order to the university, as well as the Republican Party in Louisiana, in which he was quite active.
But to us he is best known for his tireless work in promoting the Latin Liturgy. He was one of the early members of the LLA, and became its secretary-treasurer in 1984, under chairman Anthony LoBello. In 1987, he became the LLA's first vice chairman, and planned the first ever national convention in Washington, DC--a custom that continues as a standard biennial gathering of LLA members and friends. In 1994, he became chairman, continuing his voluminous correspondence with Catholics throughout the world. He established the LLA national advisory board, which meets prior to each convention and remains in contact through e-mail. He served as a consultant to the Credo group, which promotes authentic translations of Latin liturgical texts. He regularly attended the Tridentine Mass in Baton Rouge, maintaining cordial relations with the bishop there. He served as LLA chairman until 1999, at which time he was succeeded by then-vice chairman William Leininger. As part of an incorporation process in 2002, the chairman's position was renamed that of president, which is the title of current LLA president James Pauer, who took over this past June.
Dr. Edgeworth's health may have declined during the 1990's, but that did not stop him from continuing his travels, particularly through Europe and Australia, as well as the western United States. Often these were in connection with his research, but he also spent many enjoyable holidays abroad with his wife of thirty-plus years, Kathy, and his daughters Julie and Toni.
As Dr. and Mrs. Edgeworth are originally from the Chicago area, his funeral was celebrated on Wednesday, October 27, at St. Thomas More Church in Chicago, IL. Fr. Anthony Brankin, Pastor of St. Thomas More was the celebrant; the homily was given by Fr. Charles Fanelli.
Donations may be made to either the Fraternity of St. Peter or the American Cancer Society.

I've met Dr. Edgeworth a couple of times, and had some correspondence with him. He was always a Christian gentleman, and a man of peace. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. And let everyone say, Amen.

William Leininger, the former president of the LLA has been ill for a long time, and can use our prayers as well. |
